One Scan

Smaller is Just Better

I took this photo of these miniature hygiene products that I bought for my expedition to Denver a few weeks ago. They were just sitting around my apartment so I figured I'd throw them on my scanner and take a shot at it. I left the lid off and turned all of the lights off in my room. I like how it turned out.

It really shows all of the branding that happens in the marketplace.

The next thing that I just had laying around a poor college student's apartment was a bunch of money. So I decided to gather it up and throw it on the scanner. I grabbed a clock and decided to make a collage of time and money. I took the images into Photoshop and did some border work with a grunge brush. I did an overlay blend with the two images and add a solid color adjustment layer to give it some more green. I added a torn edges filter to the image. Here it is:

I was walking home from the Spori and noticed this LOADING sign painted on the sidewalk. It reminded me that we are constantly waiting for loading in life. Even the parking space is required to load. So I put my laptop there and made it look like it was loading. I don't even know if it makes sense but it did in my head. I just added the signature to the photo.

The second photo was the brain child of my brother. We both agreed that it is all about the vampires right now. So I grabbed a mirror and took one shot of me in front of the mirror and then I took one shot with out me. I then took the image of the empty mirror and just selected the pepsi cup and put it on the mirror. I made a GIF with animation but for some reason it doesn't play on this blog.

Fine Art Template

I took the first picture right when the sun was going down behind my mom's house in Shelley. I liked the light that came through the trees and the lens captured some nice depth of field. I brought the photo into Photoshop and added it to my Fine Art Template. I created a clipping mask and added my signature and text.

I took the second shot in Banack Montana. I really liked the red brick hotel. I added some levels, sats, and vibrance to the shot. Then I added it to my Fine Art Template.

Edge Effects

I went on a photo shoot for my moms birthday using a Canon 16-35mm wide angle lens. It is an amazing lens if I could just spend the $1500 for it. For the party picture I used a brush stroke filter and then flattened the image. I then used a mask and a thick brush to give it the brushed on effect. I added a border by adding canvas to all sides and then a caption. For the portrait I tried deleting the image and then using the history brush with a grunge brush to paint it back on. I added a solid color adjustment layer for the colored background and added a caption. For the ballon I followed the sprayed on edges tutorial and added a caption.

Night and Light

I had a lot of fun with these photos. For the first one I set up the tripod and dialed the shutter speed to 15 seconds on shutter speed priority. I had my brother snap a portable flash every time I moved to a new spot. For the blue trumpet photo I used a blue flashlight on my brother's flashlight to light up the trumpet. I used a tripod in a completely black room with shutter speed priority to 20 seconds. I slowly lit up the trumpet with the light and then moved the light around for the ambient light. My favorite was the orange flower picture. I love the way the light looks like ribbons. For this photo I set a fake flower in a vase and used an orange light to light it up. I then moved the light around to look like the ribbons. I set the camera to shutter speed priority at 15 seconds.

Project 365 with Photos

The assignment was to take a photo a day for 7 consecutive days. The inspiration comes from a Project 365 website. The class provided a few templates to choose from to create the photo book. I decided to go with this one but I ended up tweaking it a little bit. I used some different colors and added the big numbers to make it kinda look like a calendar. I cropped all of my photos to the same size so that they looked uniform. I inserted the photos and used guides to line them all up. It would be very easy to insert new photos for a future project. This was a really fun project.

I tried to capture a variety of photos using different angles, light, etc. I attended the Denver Expedition during the project so my days were a little messed up. Portrait Enhancements

For the shot of my grandparents I tried out the tutorial on clone stamp tool to enhance skin tone. I also added some levels, sats, vibrance, and a photo filter. For the second photo I followed the match color tutorial. I used another photo that I really liked to match the color. I also added levels, sats, vibrance, and a lens correction vignette. For the last photo I tried out the replace color tutorial to turn the white background to violet. I then enhanced the photo with sats, levels, vibrance, and added a lens correction vignette. I took all of these photos with either a fixed 50mm lens or a 16mm wide angle lens and a Canon T1i.

I had fun taking pictures of family for this assignment. I used two different lenses on these photos. I tried out a Canon 16mm wide angle lens. It was amazing--although I don't think I quite figured out its capabilities. I also used a fixed 50mm. I did very basic edits on these shots: levels, sats, vignette, and a photo filter. I will show more edits on the next post.

I had so much fun experimenting with portraits. It was my favorite thing to do on our photo shoot. Once I had these images into Photoshop I converted them to Smart Objects and started playing around with some stuff. On these shots I adjusted the levels, saturation, vibrance, exposure, and added a warming photo filter. When the vibrance and saturation effected skin tone I used a mask out over their skin to keep things natural.

Reverse Shallow Depth

For the gear shots I was experimenting with the different focus/blur assignment. I used my spot metering to target in on the spot that I wanted to be in focus. I was on Auto Focus on my lens and the camera did a great job at blurring out whatever I wasn't focused on because of my F stop.

Action Blur (Ghost Shots)

I used Shutter Speed Priority to capture these shots. I wanted to have the people turn out more transparent so they looked like ghosts but I didn't quite get it as I wanted. For the top shot, we used our tripods in the Mason classroom. The room wasn't very light so we were able to set our shutter speed to about 2-3 seconds. We had Andrea walk really slow in order to absorb enough light for the photo to turn out. For Bre's shot we just had her spin on the merry-go-round at a pretty slow speed and used tripods to stabilize the shot. For the bottom shot, we sat at the end of the hall at Hotel Meade and had Andrea walk from one room across the hall to the other side. It overexposed the shot because of the light entering the hallway. I did a minor edit with a temperature filter in Photoshop.

This shot is simple. I had Josh (Joaquin) jump off the steps of Hotel Meade. I set my camera to shutter speed priority to freeze the motion and used a tripod to stabilize the shot.

HDR

Using the Dynamic Photo trial (www.mediachance.com) I produced some HDR (High Dynamic Range) photos. I tried making HDR photos from 1 photo, 2 photos, and 3 photos. For the old truck photo, I took 3 separate shots on a monopod. I used AEB bracketing to take a shot that was underexposed, one at normal, and one overexposed. I then took the 3 photos into Dynamic Photo and did some tone mapping. I decided to use Kelvin to add some temperature to the photo and used a soft vignette filter. For the gears photo I used 2 shots: one under exposed and one normal. I then used DP for some tone mapping and a filter. I used Kelvin and the vignette filter again like the truck photo. I used the same process for the blue truck photo. For the license plate photo I tried a stronger vignette and a sepia filter. It was fun using HDR but I still have so much to learn.

I took these two images into Photoshop and used the Overlay blending mode to merge them. I adjusted some levels, saturation, and opacity. I like the texture that came from the shot of the gold furnace.

Portraits

We went on a photo shoot to Bannack, Montana on Friday and had some fun taking lots of different kinds of pictures. My favorite shots ended up being the portrait shots. Thank goodness everyone was so willing to get their picture taken. We snapped these shots in front of Hotel Meade and the sun was just right. The clouds diffused the light really well and I liked how these turned out. Levi and Bre's photos are completely unedited. For Andrea's, I just tried a couple of things and ended up making it a smart object, added a levels adjustment layer, increased some sats, added some vibrance and warmed it up with a warming photo filter.

RAW challenge

I took this photo in RAW and opened it in Camera Raw to open as a Smart Object in Photoshop. Once I had it in raw I adjusted the saturation and heated up the temperature. I then took it into Photoshop as a Smart Object. I added a gaussian blur and then I used the free mask with black paint on a paintbrush to mask out the blur on the main bird. I then added some noise to the border as a vignette.

Camera RAW Edits

When I went to the Zoo a couple weekends ago, I took some shots of this monkey that just didn't turn out. I couldn't get the lighting right, I was shooting through glass, and my exposure settings were just off. So I was excited when I was able to take a totally underexposed photo and be able to get an image out of it. I took the photo in RAW on my camera and so editing the settings in Camera Raw was a cinch. I opened it up in CR and brightened up the black fill lights and desaturated the image. I adjusted some of the contrast and did some restoration. It was fun to play around with the different sliders. I was happy to see what was under all of that black.

Panorama

I decided to head out to Saint Anthony for my panoramic. I found this cool bridge and decided to get a bunch of shots of it and of the river next to it. I used a monopod to keep the camera steady and took a bunch of shots. I ended up merging 13 shots for this very wide panoramic. I really like what Photoshop did to merge these photos with the panoramic photo merge tool but the downfall is that the photo is so darn wide but the height is so small. It makes looking at this photo very difficult unless you have a really big monitor. I flattened the image and then cropped it. I then adjusted the levels to make the photo have a little more vibrance and contrast. I added some canvas to the bottom with a black background and the Saint Anthony caption. I added a smart filter and a vignette I made two versions of the photo: a 800 pixel wide version and a 3200 pixel wide version. The larger size has a lot more definition so I like that one the best.

Flexible Edits

I started experimenting with adjustment layers on this photo of my friend Wyatt. I added an adjustment layer with multiply blending mode. I added a mask and used a paintbrush for the white and black paint for the border stuff. I masked out some of the edits on the mask that comes with the adjustment layer. For my sister Sheena's photo I converted layer to smart filter, added a Fresco filter, and used a paintbrush with black paint on the free mask to mask out some of the effect. I liked the Fresco look so I left most of it there.

I went for a photo shoot last weekend to the Idaho Falls Tautphaus Park Zoo and to my mother's house. I was armed with a Canon L 16-35mm wide angle lens. WOW! What a lens! If you haven't used this lens before I definitely recommend it. I rented it from Tech Time Rentals in Idaho Falls. It was $45 a day but compared to the $1500 price tag, I thought it was a pretty good deal. The lens has a very minimal zoom so getting close ups on the animals was quite hard. But I tried to get as close as I could on them to get a good shot. For the flower shots I got up real close to get some good bokeh.

I used Photoshop to blend these images. I added a burned border. I blended them with the Overlay blending tool. I liked the colors that came from combining the images. I added text of drum rudiments as if it were an ad for a drum manufacturer.

Photo shoot in the Windy City (Chicago has nothing on Rexburg) 4May2010.

I took out my newly acquired Canon EOS Rebel T1i to try it out. I'm loving the camera already. It is very user friendly and highly compatible with all the different types of shots that I've always wanted to try. I'm new to photography and am anxious to gain some skills. Right now I am using the Canon 50mm f1.8 lens. I love what it does with shallow depth of field. It really shows some good bokeh. I mostly have been experiencing with a low f stop on aperture priority but hope to venture out of my comfort zone soon. Here are some of the different shots that I have tried so far. Cutout Edits

Rexburg Nature Park

I went to Rexburg Nature Park to find a subject for a full and partial cutout. I used a Sony digital camera to capture this moment in time. I wanted to have a picture of a duck facing the camera in order for the cutout to look good.

Duck cutout

Using a combination of selection tools in Photoshop, I cut out the image of the duck and placed it on a white background. This will allow people to use the image on any background if they wanted to.

Picnic Time

Using the Sony digital camera, I captured a picture of this outdoor table.

Using the lasso and magnetic lasso I selected the top of this picnic table in order to put it on a partial blank background. If someone were to buy the photo they would have the opportunity to place it on any kind of background or add text, etc., to the picture.

Master Lock

For this photo I was experimenting with the settings on my new Canon PowerShot. I had never used the manual settings on the camera before and so this photo just happened out of trial and error.

I like how the object doesn't fit in the frame and that you can see depth of field and some bokeh. This photo is totally unedited. I used Av to turn down the F stop as low as it would go. I got it to go to 2.8. I got really close to the object at a steep angle to have strong focus on part of it and blur on the other.

Lisa's Birthday

I brought my Canon PowerShot to my sister's birthday celebration at Applebee's. While we were waiting for our food I experimented with different angles and manual settings. For this photo, I ended up setting the F stop to 3.5 and I liked how the blur on the sides turned out. The lights on the left where blurry and I think they ad some contrast, and whatever it is to the right of her (someone's arm?) turned out pretty good too.

This photo is unedited. I used my Canon PowerShot to capture a close-up of the symbol on my steering wheel. I was playing around with the manual settings and ended up taking this shot with a pretty low F stop: 3.2. I like the light reflection and how the blur turned out.

Time

For Advanced Visual we were asked to experiment with capturing light. For this photo I set the exposure to 15 seconds. The F stop was also really low: 2.8. I used the light on my watch to spell out Time. I like how it turned out especially how you can see the time on the watch throughout the picture. I moved my watched and kept the camera stationary. I took this picture under my desk and used sheets to keep out the light.

Guitar Knob

This image is edited. I overlaid two images in Photoshop. I used the Overlay blending tool with a multiplier. I like how the colors of the two images make the photo glow. For the main photo I took an extreme close up with macro settings to capture the image. The second photo was a texture photo of a Djembe drum head. I added a burned border as well.

My name is Seth Lofgreen. I am from Idaho Falls, Idaho. I am in my last semester at Brigham Young University-Idaho pursuing a Communication degree. I have loved my design and advertising classes and hope to get an internship this fall that will allow me to learn more about the industry. I work at Applebee's in Rexburg as a waiter so you can come see me there. My favorite thing to do outside of school and work is to focus on my fitness goals at World Gym in Rexburg.
